Ebong Amra

Established in 1994, Ebong Amra stands as a distinguished repertory company with a core ensemble of 30 permanent members hailing from the local tribal community and the economically marginalized strata of the region. Embracing regional forms and rituals, the group has cultivated a unique performance aesthetic, showcasing its innovative prowess across various stages, arenas, and open-air spaces. Over the years, Ebong Amra has presented a repertoire of 31 plays, receiving acclaim through widespread staging in both India and Bangladesh.

Among its notable productions are “Neel Piriter Ful” (2021), “Macbeth” (2019), “Khunir Maa” (2018), “Andho Yug” (2017), “Mahabharat in the Mango Orchard” (2016), “Suryaphuler Rupkatha” (2014), “Oedipus” (2013), “Apon Alo” (2012), and “Mahakabyer Pore” (2011). The company’s journey has been enriched by mentorship from eminent theatre personalities such as Ratan Thiyum, K. N. Panikkar, Rudraprasad Sengupta, Probir Guha, Chandradasan, Samik Bandyopadhyay, S. Ramanujam, and others.

In 2005, The Flying Fish Theatre Company from Berlin collaborated with Ebong Amra for a month-long theatre workshop at its Satkahunia campus. Similarly, in 2008, the Russian Academy for Theatre Arts, Moscow, conducted a brief workshop session. The group places a strong emphasis on continuous learning and development, organizing various training programs, workshops, seminars, and classes for its artists.

Ebong Amra’s artists are multifaceted, proficient in dance forms such as Kathakali, Bharat Natyam, Chow, and Tribal dances, as well as martial arts like Kalari, Raibese, and Thangta. They excel in music, encompassing Folk and Tribal genres, and possess skills in painting and prop-making.

Expressing a keen interest in utilizing rural spaces for theatre, Ebong Amra actively explores different natural settings. The group aspires to forge a new language for rural theatre, and to further this vision, they are developing a Rural Theatre Training Centre named Tepantar. Situated on a 4-acre expanse in Satkahunia, Paschim Bardhaman, West Bengal, Tepantar is not only carving a niche for itself in the national arena but has also gained recognition on the international stage. It stands as the sole theatre village and Rural Theatre Centre in West Bengal, showcasing the group’s commitment to fostering a vibrant cultural legacy in rural communities.
