About

Tepantar Theatre Village

Tepantar stands as the exclusive theater village of West Bengal, nestled in the bucolic village of Satkahunia within the Paschim Bardhaman district. Established over a sprawling 4-acre expanse by the visionary organization Ebong Amra, its inception dates back to the year 1999. Strategically located between Panagarh and Santiniketan, Tepantar is situated 20 kilometers from Panagarh and 23 kilometers from Santiniketan, with the culturally rich Joydeb-Kenduli a mere 15 kilometers away. The nearest Bus Stand, known as 11 Mile, provides accessibility to this unique cultural haven.

The Tepantar campus, ensconced amidst the natural beauty of the Ajoy River and Garh jungle, boasts a rich history and cultural heritage. Positioned within the jurisdiction of Bankati Gram Panchayat, this rural enclave has been meticulously transformed by the dedicated efforts of Ebong Amra. The organization, having acquired ownership of the once infertile and uneven land, undertook the Herculean task of cultivation, establishing a poultry farm, and cultivating mango and guava orchards. A purposeful pond was excavated, initiating a flourishing fishery. Earnings from these endeavors contribute not only to the remuneration of the resident artists but also to the overall improvement of Tepantar and the productions curated by Ebong Amra.

This transformative journey is sustained through the tireless commitment of members, coupled with financial support from bank loans and the benevolence of the local populace. Substantial aid has been extended by entities such as Bonkati Gram Panchayat, Kanksa Panchayat Samity, the Backward Classes Welfare Department, Bardhaman University, and other stakeholders.

A significant milestone in Tepantar’s evolution is the construction of a state-of-the-art Black Box Theatre, made possible through the Member of Parliament Local Area Development (MP LAD) funds of Dr. B. Jayashree, MP, Rajya Sabha. Further enhancing this cultural haven, the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, has sanctioned a Grant-in-Aid to culminate the second phase of the Black Box Theatre project. Throughout the year, Tepantar attracts a diverse array of theater personalities, cultural groups, tourists, and visitors from both India and abroad. Ebong Amra envisions Tepantar not merely as a rural theater but as an exemplary cultural center, poised to play a pivotal role in the realm of Indian theater and culture.
