Oedipus

Synopsis

Oedipus answers the Sphinx’s riddles, and rids Thebes of its stranglehold. The citizens of Thebes anoint him king, and he marries the queen Jocasta. Soon after Thebes reels under a deadly poisonous air, and is reduced to a graveyard. Oedipus instructs Creon, Jocasta’s brother, to visit the Delphic Oracle and know the cause for this. The oracle declares that the killer of former king, Laius, needs to be identified and killed. Oedipus vows to hunt out the killer and exile him. The blind seer Tiresias is summoned. He declares that Oedipus is the killer. It is revealed through a series of incidents that unknowingly, Oedipus had actually killed Laius. Shattered by this revelation, Jocasta commits suicide. Handing over the charge of his child Antigone to Creon, Oedipus goes on a self:imposed exile, honouring his vow to Thebes.

Director’s Note

The Oedipus myth has been interpreted in various ways over the years. In our interpretation, the myth has been explored through a framing of ritual theatre, with minor interpolations. Elements unknown/feared by the human imagination, like the sphinx, the oracle, or the god of pestilence have taken pre-modern forms in their costumes and performance. Oedipus emerges as a democratically elected king, committed to his people, even if it means disempowering himself. Using indigenous elements in developing the design of the play, the questions raised and explored by play are given a universal dimension—a quality of any classic, transcending the bounds of historical or cultural specificity.
