Born on November 26, 1976, Kallol Bhattacharyya, a Mass Communication Post Graduate, founded the Ebong Amra theatre group in 1994. Drawing talent from tribal settlements and underprivileged communities, he transformed them into a self-sustaining community engaged in agriculture and poultry, dedicating the remainder of their time to theatre. A prolific playwright, director, and actor, Bhattacharyya has crafted 27 plays, showcasing his versatility in Proscenium, Open air, and Experimental theatre.

Collaborating with theatre luminaries like Ratan Thiyam and K.N. Panikkar, Bhattacharyya gained diverse experiences, including engagements with international theatre entities such as the Flying Fish Theatre Company in Germany and the Russian Academy for Theatre Arts. His works, including “Oedipus,” “Andha Yug,” “Khunir Maa,” and “Mahakabyer Pore,” have graced National and International Theatre Festivals, earning acclaim.

Notably, “Oedipus” and “Mahakabyer Pore” received high praise at the Bharat Rang Mahotsav, and “Andha Yug” was featured at the 8th International Theatre Festival of Kerala in 2017. Bhattacharyya’s ongoing venture involves establishing a unique Theatre Village cum Rural Theatre Centre, named Tepantar, on a four-acre plot in Satkahunia, Burdwan, West Bengal. This avant-garde initiative aims to host theatre workshops, national festivals, seminars, training programs, cultural events, children’s theatre, and experimental performances throughout the year, aspiring to redefine the language of theatre in a rural setting.
