Synopsis
In this Bengali production, Kallol Bhattacharya ingeniously alters The Mahabharata’s Eklavya narrative. The Kshatriyas wield global dominance, perpetuating self-serving wars that claim innocent Shudra lives. Long oppressed, the Shudras declare war against the Kshatriyas. Eklavya, assigned to learn warcraft from Dronacharya, faces rejection due to his Shudra status. Undeterred, Eklavya retreats to the depths of the forest, mastering Dronacharya’s teachings through relentless self-discipline and meditation with the forest dwellers’ aid. Dronacharya learns of Eklavya’s prowess through his Kshatriya disciples, prompting a meeting. Dronacharya demands Eklavya’s right-hand thumb as Gurudakshina. Eklavya, prepared to comply, faces opposition from the Shudras, asserting the thumb as distinctly Shudra. Refusing Gurudakshina, Eklavya’s stance leads to Dronacharya’s imprisonment, along with his Kshatriya disciples.
Director’s Note
This theatrical production draws inspiration from Eklavya’s narrative in the Mahabharata. Significant adaptations to the central theme cater specifically to the concerns of the Shudras. The performance features artists hailing from economically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds, notably the Shudra and tribal communities. Meticulously crafted through extensive discussions and interactions with these communities, the play seamlessly integrates physical acting and dialogue, enriched further by the incorporation of diverse tribal forms and rituals.
